Education: Where are we today?Strengthening our higher education system must be a priority. Not only do we need to be mindful of helping students afford higher education, we need to provide money to insure that they have excellent professors and a well-maintained university. Colorado's economic growth is dependent on our younger population moving on to higher education; we need motivated and successful students to take jobs here in Colorado in order to grow our economy. As a legislator, I would make higher education funding a priority as well as increasing the budget in grades K-12. I do believe that students, teachers, and schools need to be held accountable for a certain level of educational expectations, however I am not convinced our current system with CSAP testing is the right answer. I believe that we need to have accountability for the money spent for education in K-12, but I don't believe there is a one size fits all approach to educating our children. We need educators to be creative and incorporate flexible learning styles. We need to challenge the gifted and support the children at risk. Colorado will need bold education reform to meet the challenge. Colorado's future prosperity will depend on a well-educated population. I find it disturbing that we take funds away from schools that fail to measure up to the state's expectations. These are the schools that need the funds the most. We need to find a way to be sure that K-12 has a fair share of the Colorado budget. Colorado needs to increase grants, scholarships, and affordable loans for students attending college. Colorado needs tax incentives to build more charter and magnet schools. Colorado needs to look for alternative ways to raise money for our education budget. One idea that we might consider is to allow Colorado's gaming industry to raise its betting limits and expand gaming. A portion of the revenue could go towards education to help students pay for higher education and to help maintain our universities. Increased drilling revenue should be used to help improve all college education needs. |
