Building Roads for Better Transportation

Without question bad roads and dangerous bridges are a serious problem to Colorado at the present time. Our state highway system has grown into a network of state and local roads with taxpayers in one area of the state paying for roads they never use in other parts of the state. Colorado needs transportation funding that is predictable, accountable, and sustainable. One proposal would be to allow voters to protect transportation funding by reserving auto related sales tax revenue specifically for transportation. Right now transportation funding runs through the rest of the budget first and can easily be siphoned off to other areas before it reaches its final destination. As a legislator, I would work very hard to first prioritize our budget needs and then see to it that each need is met proportionately. Colorado desperately needs to address mass transportation. This mass transportation should not be funded by increased taxes, but rather by its fair portion of the budget. If these dollars are not enough, then we need to clearly explain to the voters what was completed with the money that was allocated, how much more is needed and then perhaps, by thinking outside the box, we can find additional means of funding new mass transportation. One such idea could be the sales of bonds. We cannot afford to neglect upkeep and postpone expansion of Colorado's transportation grid. We must treat transportation like the budget priority it is supposed to be by protecting current funding constitutionally. We also must make highway funding fair for the taxpaying public and we have to be more innovative in our approach to financing new projects. I believe its time to take a look at our transportation system to make sure its being properly and fairly funded with an eye on the future for alternative transportation.
